Ms Isabell Claus and one of our High Potential Members
Ms Sina Kratzert were delighted to take part in a university course at the
"Dubai University College" - one of the very few real arab universities
in the United Arab Emirates.
The course was on the topic of "Anthropology / culture & society" and gave
a view on different aspects of culture worldwide. Our teacher came from
New Zealand and grew up in a very different society compared to ours, which
gave us the possiblity to get exclusive information about the living in
tribes and spirituality.
We were a group of about 25 people and our colleagues came for instance
from Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. Probably we were the only Europeans.
Many differences between our european university system and culture and
the one here in an arab country were obvious. First of all - everybody comes
too late. Sorry, but the prejudice seems to be true. Some students showed
up one and a half hour too late. However, they are not allowed. The result
if they do it many times is, that they can not finish the course but have
to pay - nevertheless they do not care at all.
Girls are extremely shy. If they should present something they hardly stand
up and speek just a little. Furthermore they sit all together in a group
away from the guys.
As probably in all arab countries religion has to be respected strictly.
Almost every place has a prayers room and praying times during the lessons
were given to our students.
These are just some examples of our great experience. Sina and me noticed
many things during our visit in the local Dubai University. It was very
interesting and thanks to the university to make that possible.
